Originally called Porta dei Cannoni (meaning Cannon Gate), the Portes des Bombes is an ornamental arched gate, the outer entrance to Floriana, leading to the main entrance Porta Sant'Anna, was originally built in 1721.

It was enlarged by the construction of a second archway in 1868. After the ramparts on either side of the gate were demolished, the gate now resembles a triumphal arch, leaving more space for vehicles to access Floriana and Valletta.
