A Landmark Right Next To Valletta City Gate

The Triton Fountain square just outside the capital city of Valletta, in front of the main gate of the capital city as was originally designed by the Knights of St. John.

Today all this area has been completed modernised and upgraded including the main gate of the capital by the world renouned Italian architect Renzo Piano. 

​

The Triton Fountain is one of Malta's most important modernist landmarks that attracts many people to this area for photos and memories.

Valletta Fortifications Circa 1900's

A view of Floriana from Valletta bastions showing the massive transformation as parts of the bastions were demolished to make way for open spaces for traffic.

A photo taken from the St. Madaleine's Lunette (demolished) which today is where we find the Triton fountain.

1910's

After St. Madaleine's Lunette was demolished all the area was re-shaped into open spaces and surrounding roads to facilitate better access to the capital city.

Triton Square Mid-1920's

The area continued to be enhanced where the traffic to the capital city increased and always remained the central hub of public transport till today.

Triton Before 1929

This is the time when Triton Square started to be used by public transport buses to many villages around the island.

Triton Square Late 1960's

The Triton Fountain was designed by Chevalier Vincent Apap and Victor Anastasi. The construction in 1955 and was completed by 1959.

Aerial View 1960's

An aerial view of Triton square until it was completely pedestrianised and inaugurated when Valletta was the European Capital of Culture in 2018.
